Names and Functions of Orthodontics instruments


Many of the instruments used for orthodontic treatment are unique to the discipline of orthodontics.  Knowledge of these instruments and their uses is important for all dental students before commencing orthodontic treatment on patients. What follows is an introduction and brief description of some of the more commonly used instruments for treating an orthodontic patient.

There are a variety of orthodontic pliers available that are designed for specific procedures. They include:

1:- Band Removing: 

a: How Pliers

Howe utility pliers have two long beaks with pads at the ends that are used to hold archwires during placement and removal.

shear cuts upper and lower bands with a minimum of patient discomfort. Place the cutting tips on the gingival and incisal edges of the band toward the interproximal.                                                                       

CAUTION: Care should be used while slitting the band. Be careful the tips do not come in contact with the welding flange or tie-wings of the attachment. Not recommended for molars. Excellent for removing direct bond brackets with the new mesh-type pads.


2:- Bond Removing Orthodontic Pliers

Bond removing orthodontic pliers, also called adhesive removing pliers or debonding pliers, feature a blade on one side with an occlusal pad on the other to remove adhesives and bonding agents. They also can be used for removing metal and aesthetic brackets. The tips may be stainless steel or feature tungsten carbide inserts for better gripping ability, and they can be angled for posterior access. Some adhesive removing pliers also feature a spring mechanism to improve durability. 3:-Contouring Orthodontic Pliers

Contouring orthodontic pliers are ideal for forming and contouring archwires, reshaping molar bands and enhancing crown form contours. They also are especially useful for placing accentuated curves in wires. Contouring orthodontic pliers may feature a grooved tip surface for precise gripping of specific size archwires or may be non-grooved for contouring of any wire at any position of the tip. The tips should provide a sure grip to prevent scoring of the wire while contouring and bending archwires.
